The new Shetland Abattoir was officially opened on Thursday 20th October 2011 by Josie Simpson, political leader of the Shetland Islands Council. Alasdair MacPherson of Shetland's Finest attended the ceremony and enjoyed a tour around the new facility.
He commented, "The opening of the Shetland Abattoir is very exciting for us, as earlier this month we launched Native Shetland Lamb onto our product range and we are confident that our customers will appreciate this valuable addition."
The Abattoir is a great asset for the crofting community enabling meats to be professionally cut and matured to modern standards. At the event Josie Simpson commented "The agricultural industry here in the isles has always been a vital part of our economy so I am very pleased to see an expansion of services that will facilitate its development for the future."
We cannot wait to see how the Shetland's Finest range of lamb will develop over the coming months as we continue to work in partnership with farmers to bring the best of Shetland products to wholesalers across the United Kingdom.
Chairman of The Shetland Abattoir Cooperative Ltd, John Alex Cromarty, said "It's very encouraging to note that although we've only been operating in a commissioning mode to date, we've been able to reach close to 70 per cent capacity, which clearly demonstrates the high demand for the facility".
Not only will the Abattoir enable livestock to be processed from slaughter right through to the final butchered product, it will also provide a space for carcasses to be chilled in the most efficient manner, ensuring that the optimum amount of freshness and goodness is maintained.
